We offer complete professional land surveying services based on experience, records, and computer technology. Our survey crews are capable of completing surveying projects ranging in size from single family lots to regional and national projects of extensive size and complexity. Our professional skills qualify us in all areas of surveying, including:
• Deed Research • Outboundaries • ALTA/ASCM • Topographic& Hydrographic • Photogrametric control • GPS Surveying (Static and RTK) • Building (Interior Space and Wall) Surveys • Construction Staking • Preparation of Survey Plats, Legal Descriptions, & Topographic Maps • GPS Equipment Rental
The Surveying Department at Clayton Engineering consists of the survey department manager, 3 survey coordinators, 3 survey crews, 1 survey technician, and 1 tesearcher. The staff has 4 registered surveyors licensed in Missouri and Illinois. The department is managed by Kevin DeSain who has over 16 years experience in a wide variety of survey tasks and projects. The department has over 65 years aggregate experience in the surveying industry. The department meets weekly to plan the weeks work load and deadlines, then Mr. DeSain meets with the company department heads and corporate management to coordinate project schedules and staff requirements. |

EXPERIENCE
The Clayton Engineering Company has been providing surveying and civil engineering services to public and private clients for more than 60 years. Some specific areas of expertise are:
OUTBOUNDARY (Retracement) SURVEYS: All our survey coordinators (survey project managers) and crews are particularly experienced in boundary surveys. These surveys are required on most projects. All project managers are registered in Missouri and Illinois and are experienced in researching deeds, boundary survey statutes and procedures. Over the fifty years we have been in existence we have built up an extensive file of recorded plats, deeds and other survey information in all parts of the Bi-State region.
CONTROL SURVEYS: Most of our surveys include horizontal and vertical control work; we have extensive experience with our Global Positioning System receivers and software as well as our conventional Geodimeter Total Station instruments. We have established 2nd order horizontal and vertical control on various sites utilizing both methods.
TOPOGRAPHIC: All our field parties are experienced in establishing horizontal and vertical control for aerial topographic surveying and use of the cross section method. This work is required on most of our engineering projects.
CARTOGRAPHIC: As part of the work for the Lambert St. Louis Airport Authority, we prepared a boundary plat of the original airport property consisting of approximately 2400 acres and 1200 acres of additions showing over 1500 parcels. This was required as a exhibit for their FAA Grants. This work was done on our CAD system so that the plats, 21 sheets in all, could be readily updated as properties were acquired and new grant requests initiated.
COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING CAPABILITIES (CAD): Clayton Engineering has made a long-term commitment to design automation by employing a Computer Section Manager to coordinate all hardware purchases and software development. We have over 25 CAD stations which run AutoCAD. Most data reduction and surveying analysis are done outside of AutoCAD using a suite of programs developed in-house. The results are then transferred into AutoCAD. We also have the ability to use Microstation CAD on projects.
The first link in the data-reduction chain is the use of high precision total stations linked to data collectors which run our own custom software. All measurements are retained electronically in "field book" form, with no data reduction taking place in the field. This raw data is transferred by serial link to one of our office computer where it is reduced to readable form and traverse closure, checking, and verification is done by a survey coordinator. Our own COGO program can be used to check and edit the computed points and a "plot file" is created to send graphics information into AutoCAD for final checking and cleanup. This graphic file can also be converted to IGDS format using the Decision Graphics Inc. product. Layering and text style conventions are coordinated in advance with our clients specifications and the final product can be delivered in a variety of digital as well as a hard copy formats.
HYDROGRAPHIC SURVEYING: Clayton Engineering has a twenty-foot flat bottom john boat that allows us the diversity to work on small rivers and stream as well as large bodies of water. We utilize our GPS equipment and fathometer to get highly accurate results.
BUILDING INTERIOR SPACE SURVEYS: Clayton Engineering has performed a variety interior space and exterior wall surveys to assist in the renovation and preservation of many older building in St. Louis City.
QUALITY CONTROL: The following items are included in Clayton Engineering’s quality control program:
· All work is supervised by registered land surveyors. · Reconnaissance and pre-start up planning are performed to organize the survey effort. · All survey equipment is checked for accuracy before and after beginning a project or phase thereof. Test ranges for EDM equipment have been established by the Missouri State Surveyor at Forest Park in St. Louis and in West St. Louis County. · All new data collector information is retained and data reduction is only done by registered land surveyors.
Our custom software assists by highlighting possible discrepancies and allowing much flexibility in how the traverse is adjusted. By using the appropriate point codes, the traverse reduction software automatically performs station and benchmark checks. |
